    Default 1993 F150 with 5.0 transmission problems

A friends truck is messing up on his and from what I can gather, its the "tone ring". Id never even heard of it so I figuured Id turn to the pro's. The truck is a 93 F150, 5.0 with the E4OD transmission that is shifting wierd and the speedo is jumping around all crazy. From what Ive gathered from google, its either the VSS or the tone ring. He just replaced the VSS so Im guessing the tone ring needs replaced. My question is, how? I cant seem to find anything on it. Thanks guys.

The Tone Ring is in the rear end, I doubt the ring is bad. Probably the sensor on the rear end.

He just replaced the sensor. The rear has been grenaded at least once which made me think the ring could have weakened.

I have seen the teeth on the ring break from "GRENADED rear DIFFS"
ckeck for missing teeth that might cause irratic signal to sensor

I thought the sensor on the rear was the vss. He only replaced the sensor one the rear...which leads me to my next question...where is the vss then, haha.

Sensor on rear diff controls trans shift and speed-o-meter

What Ray said, didn't know the rear had grenaded before.

My 87 Bronco had both, the rear sensor and VSS on the tranny (where the speedo cable went in). But like Ray said the rear controls the tranny shifts.

Since the sensor is new and the problem still exists, Im guessing that the tone ring is the culprit. Im still unable to find any info on replacing the ring. I'll have him check it tomorrow. Im guessing he's gonna have to tear the rear end apart(no jokes, haha) to get to it.

Tony, was your Bronco a 4x4? From what Ive read, the 4x4's are a little different. Also, of all of the people on the board, you should know this but isnt the 93 E4OD computer controlled instead of cable driven?

The tone ring is bolted to the diff.

Yes, it's computer control'd. But the only difference between an AOD and AODE (E4OD) for the computer control'd shifts is an electronic plug. They still used the same linkage and speedo cable

I have also seen those tone rings come loose and cause crazy problems. First thing to do is take the rear cover off and look at it.

I have question then on mine it a 90 4x4 and the sensor thats on top of the rear axle the wire looks to have been cut. Now i shift fine but my abs light stays on and i have no speedo. Is that sensor related to that.

Yup, the 90 isn't an electonic shift tranny so that sensor is just speedo and abs.
